who we are

Grobanites for Africa is a grassroots charity effort whereby dedicated fans of Josh Groban attempt to affect positive change in the lives of African individuals suffering from poverty, HIV/AIDS, hunger, homelessness, or lack of educational opportunities.

Originally begun as "Grobanites for 46664," GFA is an official affiliate of the Grobanites for Charity. We work to increase awareness of the crises in Africa and encourage support of the Josh Groban Foundation through donations. Our activities include ongoing fundraisers through this site and the Josh Groban message boards, online auctions, and item sales at pre-concert meet-and-greets prior to Josh's shows while on tour.

Our History

In November 2004, Josh Groban visited South Africa during his first international concert tour. While there, he met with Nelson Mandela, visited the feeding schemes, and met with children who had been orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. He called this time in South Africa "a life-altering experience" and he pledged to offer his full support in fighting the problem of HIV/AIDS.

Grobanites for 46664 came into being as a result of Josh's appointment as Official Ambassador for Project 46664 by Nelson Mandela. His involvement and commitment to such an important cause has inspired us to dedicate ourselves and reach out to other Grobanites for their support as well.

A group of AtlantaBoundGrobanites who worked on the pre-show reception for Josh's Atlanta concert at the Fox Theater on April 20, 2004, started to prepare for the same type of event for the 2005 Atlanta concert. However, after viewing the video of Josh's visit to Soweto and hearing of his involvement, it was decided that, in lieu of a formal Meet-and-Greet, we would concentrate our efforts toward soliciting monetary donations to Project 46664 in Josh's honor. By doing this, it allowed each contributor to give a dollar amount that was within their financial capabilities.

The 'organizers' of this project began their quest for donations approximately four weeks prior to the concert, via the Friends of Josh Groban and joshgroban.com websites. With the help of the Grobanites for Charity team, we were able to expand our fundraising efforts to include Grobanites who had not planned to attend this particular concert or any concert on the 2005 tour.

Gaining Momentum
As the concert date quickly approached, Grobanites for Charity provided contribution information to use as a tool in promoting our financial goals. With their typical enthusiasm and generosity of spirit, the Grobanites answered the call, and then some! Just prior to the concert, contributions were totaled and amounted to $4000.00. A mock check prepared in this amount was presented to Josh before the show. During the presentation, Grobanites continued their fundraising efforts and, by the end of the night, had raised an additional $1000.00 dollars, making the total approximately $5000.00!

Additional funds were raised over the last weeks of the Live 2005 Tour, bringing our total funds raised to over $ 6000.00. We believe this is just the beginning, and that the Grobanites will unite behind 46664 to make a difference in the fight against AIDS in Africa.
