Description

The 2010 "Birthday Bash for Batonga" was sponsored by the Grobanites for Africa Team! All proceeds from this fundraiser went to The Josh Groban Foundation to be designated for The Batonga Foundation, whose mission is to support both secondary school and higher education for girls in Africa. This fundraiser provided sponsorships and help with the educational needs for 103 girls from two schools in Sierra Leone in Western Africa.

In addition to the individual sponsorships, the auction items and buy now items paid for additional expenses not covered in the sponsorships. This includes mentoring activities, lunches, transportation to and from the schools, employment kits upon graduation (for the Freetown girls), and other program expenses.

Waterloo Sponsorhips:

In Waterloo, Sierra Leone (in Western Africa), Batonga currently supports scholarships for 58 girls with secondary school education packages.

By sponsoring this girl, you will be paying for a set of school uniforms, a school bag, a pair of school shoes, 9 core text books including English, business, grammar, math, social studies, and literature studies, a packet of 12 workbooks, a math set including pens, pencils and erasers, and school fees.

In return for the 1 year sponsorship, you will receive a Sponsorship Package which includes the following:

  • A photo of the girl you will be sponsoring
  • A brochure on Batonga
  • A Josh and Angelique magnet (the same one that is being offered as a "Buy Now" in the auction)
  • Periodic updates on the girl you sponsor
  • Contact information to correspond with the girl you sponsor (if you wish)

Everyone who sponsors a Waterloo girl will be entered into a drawing to win a signed Angelique Kidjo "Djin Djin" CD!

SPONSORSHIP FOR GIRL AT FREETOWN
Item #1849

In Freetown, Sierra Leone (in Western Africa), Batonga is supporting 25 girls at a Vocational Training School that rescues girls from brothels and gives them job training. These are girls who were forced into the sex trade by crushing poverty and a lack of opportunities for women. They are currently enrolled in two-year training programs in professions such as sewing, photography, carpentry, basket-weaving and pottery, tie dying, tailoring, and soap making. Batonga also provides “employment kits” to graduates so that they have the tools they need to start their own business when they graduate.

By sponsoring one of these girls, you will be paying for their school fees for a vocational training program for a full year.

In return for the sponsorship, you will receiveperiodic updates on the program (by email) and a sponsorship package in the mail. The sponsorship package includes a Batonga brochure and a Josh and Angelique magnet. (This is the same magnet that is being offered as a "Buy Now" in the auction.)

SIGNED Angelique Kidjo "Oyo" CD #1
Item #1851

Angelique has signed and donated this "Oyo" CD which has not been officially released yet! (The release date is April 6, 2010.) The CD is signed "One Heart, A. Kidjo".

Kidjo returns to her roots to interpret the music that inspired her growing up in Benin: Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, James Brown and Miriam Makeba...plus Beninese traditional music and songs from Hollywood and Bollywood films.

Although Oyo is primarily comprised of covers, the music is instantly recognizable as Kidjo’s: The first thing one hears at the outset of the album is her breathtaking voice, long-sustaining the first word of “Zelie,” a song written by Bella Bellow from Togo. There are various other African songs, including “Lakutshn Llanga,” a lullaby made famous by Kidjo’s hero, Miriam Makeba, and the Beninese traditional song “Atcha Houn.” Many tracks reveal the prevalence of American soul and funk in the port city of Cotonou, where Kidjo grew up: She duets with John Legend and is joined by the horns of Antibalas on Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up,” offers Yoruban interpretations of Otis Redding’s “I’ve Got Dreams to Remember” and Santana’s “Samba Pa Ti,” collaborates with Diane Reeves on the Aretha Franklin hit, “Baby I Love You,” and also takes on James Brown’s “Cold Sweat.” Other highlights include the Sidney Bechet tune “Petite Fleur,” a favorite of Kidjo’s father, who passed away last year, and “Dil Main Chuppa Ke Pyar Ka,” the theme song of a Bollywood film they saw together some ten times.

Recorded and mixed by Russell Elevado (D’Angelo, The Roots, Erykah Badu) and produced by Kidjo and longtime collaborator Jean Hebrail, Oyo features a band of highly accomplished musicians, including another Benin-born, New York-based artist, the guitarist Lionel Loueke, as well as Christian McBride on upright bass, Kendrick Scott on drums and Thiokho Diagne on percussion. The trumpeter Roy Hargove makes a memorable appearance on “Samba Pa Ti.”

Oyo comes on the heels of Kidjo’s Djin Djin, which featured performances by a roster of eminent artists who admire her: Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Joss Stone, Branford Marsalis, Carlos Santana, Ziggy Marley, Amadou & Mariam, and of course Josh Groban!

For more information about Angelique Kidjo, go to www.angeliquekidjo.com

Josh Photo, Calendar and CD Package
Item #1974

This package features a 11"x14" photo by Alice Quade, a Closer CD (donated by Julie South) and a Josh Groban Calendar from Cathy! It also includes a GFA Button and the very first GFC luggage tag (to be offered soon in the GFC Store)!

Calendar description: 12 Months of Music & Memories: Batonga Birthday Fundraiser Calendar featuring Photos by Charlie Hu & Judy Barbosa.

This is a slightly different version of this year’s calendar from NorthernStar (Cathy). It features the same 40 beautiful full colour photographs from Charlie Hu (JoshBoy) and Judy Barbosa (with the exception of the cover image of Josh & Angelique), but the captions are more detailed and the formatting of the calendar is a little nicer (Kodak has upgraded their software!).

These pictures show Josh at a number of more recent events, including Chess in Concert, Mandela Day, and the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame induction. There are also photos of Josh in concert and the captions include a selection of favourite song lyrics. The calendar runs from March 2010 to February 2011.

Calendars are printed on heavyweight glossy card stock that is easy to write on - great for planning concert road trips! They are wire bound with a die-cut hole for ready hanging, and are approximately 10.25 inches x 15.5 inches in size.

(Special thanks to both Charlie & Judy for the use of their photographs.)

Josh Calendar (March 2010-March 2011)
Item #1858

Cathy has donated 3 of her gorgeous calendars to the auction!

Josh Groban - 12 Months of Music & Memories: Batonga Birthday Fundraiser Calendar featuring Photos by Charlie Hu & Judy Barbosa.
