Bev R's Baby Cap

Size 9 knitting needles (size 5 Canadian and English -5.5mm)

1 oz of sport or baby yarn, You can also use regular 4 ply yarn for a slightly larger baby hat.

Cast on 36 stitches.

Rows 1-5: K2, P2...repeat across for ribbing.

Row 6: K across

Row 7: P

Row 8: K

Row 9-14- Knit these 6 rows for stripe, you can even change the colors of the stripes if you wish.

Row 15-18 - stockinette stitch, knit one row, purl one row  (same as rows 6,7,8)

Rows 19-24 - Same as Row 9-14

Row 25-27 - Same as rows 6,7, 8

Row 28-33 - Same as rows 9-14

Continue in this pattern till hat measures 5" from edge of ribbing, then decrease as follows:

Knit one row, Purl one row, Knit one row.

Decrease row : Knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 2 knit together to end of row.

PURL next Row.

KNIT 2, K 2 together to end of row.

PURL next Row.

KNIT 2 together across row.  Break yarn, leaving a 12" strand. Thread a large eye needle with the strand of yarn and remove the remaining stitches left on the knitting needle. Weave the needle through the stitches and pull tightly to gather top of hat. fold hat in half and stitch the sides together to form the cap
